Understanding Your Options

Recent research has shown that adult day services are a valuable alternative for families caring for older adults. The average annual cost of adult day services is $12,000; much less than in-home care or nursing home services.  But what about the emotional value? While sometimes necessary, most individuals do not want to move to a nursing home.  Likewise, most family members do not want to admit their loved ones to a nursing home.  However, sometimes there is no other option, because the individual needs care or it’s not safe for them to stay alone.

A New Day Adult Day Services provides another option: the best of both worlds. A New Day allows the family to stay together at home, provide care and supervision for the participant, and provide respite and support to the caregiver. A New Day’s Mission is to provide older adults with social, health, nutritional, and recreational services while providing support and respite to caregivers during daytime hours.  Our organization is a community-based, free-standing Adult Day Services program.  A New Day is a non-profit organization that began serving participants and caregivers in and around DeKalb County, Indiana in October 2005.  With the U.S. population aging and living longer, and caregivers working outside the home more while having greater responsibilities of caring for their children and parents, more organizations are going to have to step up to support caregivers and their loved ones.  More programs are needed to help fill the gap in the current long-term care continuum.  A New Day Adult Day Services is trying to do just that.

The Goals of a New Day Adult Day Services are:

  • To offer a community-based alternative to help older adults maintain or restore their cognitive and physical abilities by providing therapeutic activities, nutritious meals, health monitoring, and supervision for safety.

  • To delay or prevent long-term care placement in the most cost-effective manner possible.

  • To provide respite and support for caregivers so they can continue in the workforce or take temporary breaks from caregiving and have peace of mind about their loved one’s safety and care.

Caregiver Support Group

A New Day offers a monthly Caregiver Support Group, open to any caregiver.  The Group meets on the first Tuesday of each month from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.  Once a quarter, an educational topic is presented.  Other meetings focus on peer support, allowing caregivers to share experiences and learn from one another.  Please join us if you are a caregiver!
